Palazzo di Varignana relaunches culinary experience inside 1920s train carriage
Palazzo di Varignana has relaunched Treno Reale, a culinary experience within a restored 1921 train carriage.
Coupled with the newly added FS Class 740 steam locomotive, this fine dining journey immerses up to 22 guests in Italian history, artistry and gastronomy, capturing the opulence of the early 20th century.
The Treno Reale’s vintage carriage, originally part of Italy’s prestigious FS Az 10,000 series, exemplifies the pinnacle of early 20th-century luxury travel, adorned with velvet, brass and finely carved wood. The rail car’s detailed interior, enhanced by renowned artist Gio Bressana, includes gold leaf work and intricate decorative elements inspired by Baroque and Renaissance styles.
The carriage is joined by the FS Class 740 locomotive. Built in 1921 by Officine Meccaniche in Milan, this particular locomotive served across Italy. After decades in service, it now stands proudly as a tribute to the history of Italian transportation.
The menu honours the routes and flavours of Italy’s royal train journeys, sourcing ingredients to evoke regional classics. A recommended 1920s-inspired dress code, including a dark suit and tie for gentlemen, encourages guests to immerse themselves in the era. The experience joins Palazzo di Varignana’s broader restoration efforts, led by the resort’s founder Carlo Gherardi. Nestled in the Bolognese hills, Palazzo di Varignana benefits from expansive landscapes, Varsana SPA and selection of accommodations and culinary experiences.
“This new addition to Palazzo di Varignana strengthens our estate’s luxurious appeal,” Gherardi explains. “The Treno Reale is a revived icon that brings a distinctive, modern function to a historic treasure, creating a truly one-of-a-kind experience that is emblematic of our dedication to heritage and innovation.
“We’re very proud of this exquisite restoration and delighted to bring to life a piece of Italian history in a way that celebrates the artistry, craftsmanship, and elegance of a bygone era. Every detail, from the intricate gold leaf work by Gio Bressana to the thoughtfully curated menu inspired by Italy’s royal train routes, has been chosen to offer our guests an immersive journey that transcends time.”
