New York-based Sydell Group has partnered with investment firm BTC to launch the first European outpost for the NoMad brand.
Due to open in December 2020, NoMad London is being designed by Roman and Williams, with EPR taking the lead on the architectural renovation and restoration, and Beck overseeing the bespoke fit-out. The scheme will transform the Grade II-listed Bow Street Magistrates Court in Covent Garden into a 91-key hotel with restaurants, bars and private events spaces.
An art programme developed in association with Be-Poles, which has been involved in all of the NoMad properties since the brand’s inception, will also celebrate the influence of post-war American art and European avant-garde, exploring the exchange of creative ideas.
As with other properties in the NoMad portfolio, food and beverage will play an integral role in the offer with a host of dining and drinking experiences. The hotel’s all-day dining restaurant will occupy a light filled atrium and focus on cuisine rooted in the group’s classic approach. In addition to overseeing the main restaurant, Executive Chef Ian Coogan will serve a shared plates menu inspired by his Mexican heritage; paired with a curated, agave-based spirits programme.
The Side Hustle will evoke the comfort of a pub-like environment while channeling the refinement of NoMad’s signature style. Located on the corner of the development where the entrance to the police station once stood, the space will reflect the origins of the building, combining rich brown leather and dark green textured walls with a menu showcasing the flavours and colours native to Mexico. Martin Parr’s highly saturated photography will add further colour and context to the overarching police narrative.
Supporting Coogan is NoMad New York’s original culinary captain, Abram Bissell, who rejoins the team after earning two Michelin stars during his time at The Modern in The Big Apple. The brigade will also comprise decorated mixologist Leo Robitschek, the man behind multi-award-winning NoMad Bar, alongside Bar Director Pietro Collina. The hospitality and dining room teams will be overseen by Food & Beverage Director, and NoMad NYC opening alum, Chris Perone.
Elsewhere, The Library will be a place for guests to unwind, offering some much-needed respite from the British capital and serving coffee, snacks, or even a carafe of wine. In the first-ever NoMad lounge, Common Decency, city dwellers will find a lively, East London-style craft cocktail bar complemented by elements of the West End’s establishments. This night-time refuge, housed within a subterranean playground, will also play host to a plethora of up-and-coming artists and DJs.
