Built upon the principle that well-designed equipment can improve lives, David Mellor Design has been at the forefront of British silverware design for more than 60 years. Delivering on a variety of briefs, from specially commissioned silverware for embassies to the redesign of the UK’s national traffic light system and the production of cutlery across canteens for The National Health Service.
Established in 1953, by David Mellor, Royal Designer for Industry, the silversmith was a key figure in British design with an international reputation as a designer, manufacturer and shopkeeper. Born in Sheffield, he specialised in metalwork and is best known for his innovative cutlery designs, which have won numerous awards and comprise many international collections.
In 1969, the brand’s first store opened in London’s Sloane Square, quickly becoming recognised for its creations and as a base for the company’s product development. Fast-forward to the present day and David Mellor cutlery is now manufactured in a purpose-built factory in the rural surroundings of the Peak District National Park.
Meanwhile, the David Mellor collection continues to evolve with ranges such as the Chelsea cutlery range encapsulating the very essence of the brand. Released in 2011, the Chelsea collection represents Corin Mellor’s first solo cutlery design for the brand since his father’s passing in 2009. With subtle nods to his father’s iconic designs, it is also notable for its individualism and functionality.
Influenced by classic English 18th century cutlery styles, as evidenced by the satisfying shape of the hollow-handled knife and the beautiful sculptured fluidity of the forks and spoons, the Chelsea collection is both stylish and innovative. And after numerous rounds of refinement and detailing, the range has been ergonomically designed for optimum balance in the hand.
The classic shapes and satin finish make it an ideal accompaniment to both modern and traditional dining settings and it has become a popular choice for many restaurants around the world due to its comfortable and elegant look and feel.
