Stonehill Taylor reimagines the classic NYC diner at Arlo NoMad

Stonehill Taylor has reimagined the classic New York diner experience at NoMad Diner.

Within Arlo NoMad, the design firm is inspired by Manhattan’s classic diner, bringing it to life through a modern interpretation. Stonehill Taylor reinvents the iconic 1950s experience with a nostalgic yet contemporary feel by pairing colour palettes of brown and polished chrome with warm oak paneling and leathers.

Each detail is thoughtfully considered to evoke a sense of whimsy sophistication such as the retro bar stools, leather banquettes and the stone bar top with bold veining. The industrialist concrete floors are balanced by the warm millwork and wood outlining the top of the bar.

Further emphasising the Arlo’s experience as an urban oasis, the bar’s design pulls cues from the surrounding fashion-driven NoMad neighbourhood. Drawing inspiration from streetwear and the typical materials found in a retro diner, Stonehill Taylor creates playful juxtapositions including leather and wood materials for an unexpected balance of the past and present.

A band of mirrors wraps around the bar’s perimeter to give the illusion of expansion while amplifying the play of light and reflections.

NoMad Diner elevates diner classics and turns out crave-able dishes that are equal parts comfort food and innovation. This is where avocado toast joins pancakes and omelettes on the breakfast menu, and where everything from soups, salads, and sandwiches to bagels, burgers and banana splits get a modern-day glow-up from Chef Fred Maurer and his team. Curated cocktails, artisanal spirits, and natural wines round out the dining experience.

Stonehill Taylor is a New York-based architecture and interior design firm led by Paul Taylor, serving as the visionary creatives for the TWA Hotel, The Ned NoMad, The Algonquin and more.
