Austin’s Hotel Van Zandt to debut new cocktail bar and lounge
Austin’s Hotel Van Zandt is gearing up to debut a new bar in autumn 2024, opening following renovations of the property’s lobby.
The independent hotel, which joined Sage Hospitality Group’s portfolio in late 2022, is undergoing a brand refresh led by Club in partnership with MARKZEFF, which spearheaded the hotel’s original design, to reimagine the lobby space and create the new venue, Brass Poppy.
Inspired by the hotel’s eclectic style and the original bungalow houses that once lined Rainey Street, the first-floor redesign will interweave jewel tones, antique brass, tooled leathers and custom, hand-tufted carpets sourced from Nepal.
Elevated cocktail bar and lounge Brass Poppy has been named after the flower, known for its ability to grow in adverse conditions. Alongside cosy bar and lounge seating, the venue will capture the essence of Art Nouveau forms through a metalwork installation adorning the bar.
Brass Poppy’s cocktail program will feature updated riffs on classics such as The Grasshopper and Pink Lady. A small bites menu curated by the hotel’s Executive Chef Sergio Ledesma will offer ingredients from global cuisines served exclusively in the ‘pintxos’ style – skewered onto brass spikes in single bite servings.
“Hotel Van Zandt has always been a haven in the heart of Austin for locals and travelers to gather. We see this renovation and new concept as an opportunity to expand on the many ways guests can enjoy our property,” says Chris Guse, General Manager. “We’re excited to unveil Brass Poppy this fall, it will be a fresh and energetic addition to the Austin cocktail scene.”
Stacie Meador, Lead Designer at MARKZEFF, adds: “It’s been a privilege to return to Hotel Van Zandt for this renovation project. Drawing inspiration from Austin’s lively atmosphere, the reimagined lobby space and Brass Poppy weave in textures, hues and materials that each tell a story and add a layer of depth to this iconic property.”
