Zuma has made its debut in Spain with the opening of an eatery at Hotel Fénix Gran Meliá located in Madrid’s Plaza Colón. Chef Javier Blanco will bring his expertise and experience from the brand’s Mykonos and London venues to the Spanish capital, curating a menu and experience that focuses on creativity, simplicity, elegance and sophistication.
The latest opening of the Japanese-inspired restaurant brand led by Rainer Becker will follow the typical Zuma style of offering food based around three key concepts: a sushi counter, a main kitchen, and robata – a traditional Japanese fishermen’s grill that uses bincho-tan charcoal made from burnt oak. The Madrid restaurant will serve up contemporary Japanese cuisine made using high quality ingredients and paired with premium sake and cocktails. An emphasis on design-led tableware ensures that guests are offered a comprehensive sensory experience.
The venue’s interior was designed by Japanese architect Noriyoshi Muramatsu, who leant on the world’s four natural elements (earth, fire, water and air) to create a contemporary ambience. The space features traditional Japanese materials such as recycled pine, and pays tribute to its Madrileña location via ceramic tiles that nod to both Japanese and Spanish cultures. Wooden window lattices playfully manipulate the light, drawing the outside world into the venue.
The launch marks Azumi Group’s second dining opening within a Meliá hotel, following the unveiling of the Roka Restaurant at ME Dubai, a Meliá Hotel.
