Tableside theatre is on the menu at The LaLee, the new all-day café-restaurant to open its doors in London’s Chelsea neighbourhood. The eatery, which has now opened its doors to diners, is located in The Cadogan, A Belmond Hotel, and named after one of its most famous residents, the 19th century British-American socialite Lillie Langtry.
Xavier Lablaude, General Manager at The Cadogan, A Belmond Hotel, says the restaurant will take guests on “a culinary journey to the grand cities of Europe” inspired by Langtry’s adventures. “Lillie Langtry would entertain the brightest stars of society, including the Prince of Wales, at 21 Pont Street – her elegant townhouse that became part of The Cadogan,” he explains. “Now, The LaLee brings Langtry’s spirit back to life, paying homage to the cuisine she adored during her epic travels.”
The LaLee’s design references the glamour of this bygone era, transporting the ambience of Langtry’s private dining room into a modern day setting.
Executive Chef Chris Hill has been charged with curating the menu, which features European classics such as Lobster Bisque, Aubergine Parmigiana, Steak Frites with Béarnaise Sauce and Wiener Schnitzel. Small plates including platters of fresh oysters are also available, and a selection of signature dishes – including Beef Tartare and Dover Sole – will be artfully prepared at the table, adding a dash of drama to the dining experience.
The LaLee even comes with its own wine – a bespoke ‘Reserved for The Cadogan’ English sparkling that was created exclusively for the hotel by Rathfinny Wine Estate in Sussex, England. Additionally, more than 80 wines, including classic champagnes and a rare Gevrey-Chambertin, are served by the glass.
The LaLee’s culinary journey continues via its cocktail menu, which offers 15 signature concoctions inspired by a European city frequented by Langtry. For instance, a floral Mimosa al Garibaldi pays homage to Milan, while a theatrical take on a gin and tonic, using Dutch gin, is inspired by the vibrant sights and sounds of Amsterdam.
