Munich restaurant Atelier has reopened its doors after its summer break, with a new Chef de Cuisine at the helm. The acclaimed German chef Anton Gschwendtner has succeeded Jan Hartwig in running the kitchen at the three Michelin-starred restaurant, which is located in the luxurious Hotel Bayerischer Hof.
Atelier gained its coveted third star under Hartwig, and Gschwendtner’s aim is to continue to drive this success. A Bavarian local, he is known for using principally regional and seasonal products for his elegant French dishes, enhanced by Asian flavours and ingredients. His haute cuisine is contemporary and modern, with a focus on sustainability.
Gschwendtner comes to Atelier having established a successful career in several of Germany’s most famous kitchens. He joins the restaurant from the two-starred Olivo in Stuttgart at The Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin, where he had previously worked as Chef de Cuisine from July 2018. Prior to that, he was Chef de Cuisine at the one-starred Das Loft in Vienna, located within the Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom Hotel.
His move to the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, which has been owned by the Volkhardt family for more than 100 years, sees him take the reins at something of a Munich institution. The hotel is known for its many design collaborations – not least its ongoing partnership with the Belgian interior designer and gallerist Axel Vervoordt, who is responsible for the restaurant’s luxurious, intimate and playful decor.
